Global music authority Billboard celebrated its inaugural Global Power Players event with an exclusive gathering at London’s Shoreditch House. The evening brought together music’s top international executives and artists - marking the first time Billboard has assembled its Global Power Players honorees in one room to recognize their impact on the global music industry.
The likes of Sir Elton John and his husband and manager David Furnish, afrobeats superstar Tems and EMPIRE founder and CEO Ghazi Shami were recognised with awards.
Among the night’s highlights:
- Sir Elton John and his husband and manager David Furnish were honored with the first-ever Creators’ Champion Award for their leadership in defending artists’ rights. The award recognizes their outspoken advocacy for legislation that would require tech companies to disclose and license the music used to train AI models.
- Ghazi Shami, founder and CEO of San Francisco-based EMPIRE, received the prestigious Clive Davis Visionary Award, which celebrates bold leadership and innovation in the music industry. Selected by Billboard’s editorial team, the award is named after the legendary executive Clive Davis.
- Billboard presented the Diamond Award, a recognition of excellence and influence in African music, to Nigerian star Tems, who tonight, June 5th, headlines Billboard Presents The Stage as part of SXSW London. Billboard hosts The Stage at SXSW Austin for three nights each year, featuring big-name headliners across genres. Launching the series in London marks a significant milestone for Billboard as it expands its global celebration of talent.
- As part of the Diamond Award celebration, Billboard announced the launch of Billboard Africa, further expanding its global presence. Africa and its diaspora have long been the birthplace of musical innovation, influencing genres worldwide. This launch celebrates that legacy and creates a dedicated platform to spotlight the continent’s powerful and evolving sound.
Honored with the Creators’ Champion Award, Elton John said “Thank you to Billboard for honouring myself and David Furnish with the Creators’ Champion Award. Supporting the next generation of British artists is one of the major driving forces in my life. As everyone in that room was aware, the Data Bill is currently looming over our industries and the future livelihood of all artists. It is an existential issue.
Let’s be clear - we want to work with the government. We are not anti A.I. We are not anti Big Tech. We are not against Labour. We want a solution that brings all parties together in a way that’s transparent, fair and allows artists to maintain control of their work.
We will not let The Government forget their promise to support our creative industries. We will not back down and we will not quietly go away. This is just the beginning.
Thank you Billboard. And thank you Baroness Kidron and The House of Lords for standing up for our world-beating artists, journalists, playwrights, designers and authors.”
After receiving the Diamond Award, Tems shared her thoughts, saying “Thank you so much to Billboard. I am honoured to be here. African music is moving to heights it has never been before, and Billboard is one of those key players in moving that needle forward in Africa.”
On receiving the Clive Davis Visionary Award, Ghazi Shami said “This means a lot to me…It’s all too surreal, and all I would say is never lose sight of how it all started, and for me, it all started with the music.”
Billboard CEO Mike Van commented “Thank you for welcoming us here to London. What you're experiencing tonight is the first step into how Billboard is expanding globally.”
Billboard Editor In Chief Hannah Karp added “This is the first time that we have gathered all of our global power players in one room to celebrate their leadership, and we thank you all so much for coming.”
For years, Billboard’s Global Power Players list has recognized the international executives shaping the music business beyond the U.S., while its Power 100 event in Los Angeles has celebrated domestic leadership. Now, with Billboard’s rapidly expanding global footprint - spanning 16 international editions in more than 10 languages - the 2025 Global Power Players were welcomed to London for an evening of networking, recognition, and celebration of global music excellence.
