Penske Media Corporation (PMC), the leading global media, live events and data analytics company, recently released findings from their pop culture study, Power of Shared Cultural Connections. The study explores the powerful impact of shared cultural moments and immersive events on consumer engagement, revealing that these experiences resonate profoundly with audiences, foster lifelong memories and community bonds, and offer brands a unique opportunity to cultivate loyalty and engagement through these immersive events.
“At PMC, our research shows that brands have a unique opportunity to be a part of cultural moments by engaging in shared experiences which forge deep emotional connections and loyalty that traditional media channels cannot match,” said Dan Owen, EVP, GM, Strategic Solutions Group at PMC. “As a conduit for creating these collective experiences, PMC helps our partners tap into the power of pop culture and immersive events, embedding themselves in the memories that shape fandoms.”
Key takeaways from the “Power of Shared Cultural Connections” study include:
Major pop culture experiences are a pathway to lifelong memories and provide the thrill of unexpected connection. At a moment in time when much of the world is more isolated than ever, audiences want moments that fuel gratitude and bring us closer to ourselves and each other. 77% say major pop culture experiences are a source of lifelong memories, and 72% seek out pop culture events that offer immersion into the worlds of their favorite shows, movies and artists (86% among Gen Z respondents).
Shared cultural experiences are powerful community builders, particularly when they resonate deeply with the audience’s passions and interests. The more personal and human the stories surrounding the moment are, the more impactful it becomes. 63% seek out pop culture experiences that offer deeper connections to personal interests, and 56% of Gen Z respondents say that they seek out pop culture events that offer deeper community connections with like-minded fans.
Events are always in the plans. 92% plan to attend or wish to attend pop cultural events, including music, film, and art festivals, concerts, immersive experiences and exhibits, in the next year.
Award shows are a vital part of pop culture, connecting us with our favorite artists and acting as a unifying force that creates memorable historical moments. 87% of audiences identify as being“obsessed” or “casual” fans of major award shows. Award shows foster community, with 58% saying they talk to their friends and family about them.
Brands have an incredible power as the facilitators of shared cultural connection. Creating exclusive access that brings fans closer to those moments, and the artists they love most, yields extreme loyalty. 63% consider themselves a super fan of a musician (80% of Gen Z) with 43% saying that if their favorite music artist wears/endorses something, it influences their purchase decision. Additionally, 52% would feel more loyal to a brand if it provided access to live-streamed cultural events.
The findings of PMC’s Power of Shared Cultural Connections study demonstrate that shared cultural moments profoundly influence consumer engagement. This research highlights the critical role that brands play in facilitating these vital connections and creating experiences that not only build emotional ties but also foster enduring loyalty.

Report Methodology
In August 2024, Penske Media Corporation (PMC) surveyed a highly targeted segment of 1200 engaged, pop-culturally aware individuals to explore their interest and interaction with live experiences, events, and key cultural moments; as well as the significance these hold for fans, artists, and the brands that make them happen. This study incorporates a blend of qualitative, quantitative, and first-party data, with a spotlight on distinct generational groups: Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, and Boomers.

PMC expands dominance of entertainment reporting by adding GoldDerby.com to its offerings
Los Angeles, July 21, 2015: Penske Media Corporation (PMC) today announced its acquisition of GoldDerby.com, a site renowned in Hollywood for showcasing entertainment industry award predictions by top journalists and savvy fans. Gold Derby brings with it to PMC distinctive opportunities to integrate effective prediction tools into all PMC digital properties, including both its consumer and trade publications. The purchase also enhances distinguished awards coverage by PMC publications across its portfolio, including Variety, Deadline Hollywood, Hollywood Life, TVLine, Footwear News, BGR, India.com, and WWD. The financial terms and details of the acquisition were not disclosed.
“Today’s announcement reflects our strategy to invest in quality media brands with intrinsic value,” said PMC Chairman and CEO Jay Penske. “We’ve watched Gold Derby develop as a premiere brand in Hollywood delivering innovative predictions and racetrack odds monitored closely by a devoted audience; we look forward to tapping into that audience while also benefiting from its smart digital tools.”
The site will be operated by the newly formed Gold Derby Media LLC, which will be overseen by GoldDerby.com founder Tom O’Neil, who continues as the site’s editor-in-chief and president. Editorial and tech employees will also move to PMC as part of the deal, while ad sales will be overseen by PMC’S SVP Entertainment and Publisher of Deadline Stacey Farish.
“By bringing GoldDerby.com to PMC, we see valuable opportunities for our partners and advertisers to increase their reach to key readers in exciting ways,” said Farish. “Complementing our existing awards coverage, Tom’s inventive site is an outstanding addition to PMC and we look forward to catapulting Gold Derby to even greater revenue and traffic potentials.”
GoldDerby.com was launched in 2000 by O’Neil, a journalist who has devoted his career to studying all major entertainment industry awards and is the author of Variety’s books “Movie Awards,” “The Emmys” and “The Grammys” (Penguin Putnam). From 2005 to 2011, he worked for the Los Angeles Times to help launch its awards brand The Envelope. In 2010 he re-launched GoldDerby.com with a new emphasis on technology that enabled users to make predictions and compete against journalists from PMC, Entertainment Weekly, Associated Press, Yahoo, USA Today, Los Angeles Times, The Huffington Post and other major media outlets.
“By teaming up with PMC, Gold Derby now joins the top tier of Hollywood media – I feel like I just won the Oscar,” said O’Neil.
Gold Derby users predict more than 20 award shows per year and lately have been invited to predict reality TV shows, too. The site also features more than 1,000 intimate, in-depth interviews with top talent, including Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jessica Lange, Jim Parsons, and Leonardo DiCaprio. Also popular are videos pitting the experts against each other in prediction “slugfests.” At the last Oscars derby, the experts beat users when predicting winners (83% to 75%, respectively) and nominations (71% to 68%).

NEW YORK, New York—October 30, 2017: Penske Media Corporation (PMC) and its subsidiary Fairchild Media announced the acquisition of Sourcing Journal, the premiere media brand for global executives focused on the sourcing and manufacturing industries. The purchase advances Fairchild’s and WWD’s leadership position in today’s fashion and retail business coverage.
“The future of fashion will rely much more on material sciences, sourcing and technology, so to bring into the fold the leading media publication in that space opens important opportunities for our WWD and FN brands as well as for our readers and partners,” said PMC Chairman and CEO Jay Penske. “Eddie is a remarkable entrepreneur; we’re eager to work with him and the entire Sourcing Journal team to continue the growth of this emerging brand and leading platform.”
Since its founding by Edward Hertzman and his Co-Founder Munir Mashooqullah in 2009, Sourcing Journal has swiftly taken the lead as the top-tier voice for sourcing and manufacturing industry thought leaders. Sourcing Journal’s expert editorial team leads the industry conversation with smart investigative journalism, breaking news, analysis of global market conditions and industry white papers.
“There’s something to be said about synergies and I think that’s what we’ve found with this move. When I met Jay, I knew he shared the same vision for the future of Sourcing Journal as I’ve had in all the years that got us to this point,” Hertzman said. “Now, with PMC’s positioning and insight, we’ll be able to not only grow the publication’s offerings but also reach our aim of making Sourcing Journal the homepage for the entire global supply chain industry.”
As an extension of its editorial content, Sourcing Journal’s summits gather the industry’s thought leaders and premier executives for high-level networking as well as candid and professional discussion and debate around the most pressing industry challenges and opportunities. These conference offerings are slated to grow as part of PMC and Fairchild, where Sourcing Journal will leverage the infrastructure of the robust Fairchild Live events business in order to expand its year-round global offerings.
“In the increasingly fast moving worlds of fashion, retail and beauty, the winners will be those with the most advanced and flexible logistics and sourcing capabilities,” said James Fallon, editorial director of WWD. “While WWD has always covered these areas, the acquisition of Sourcing Journal will enable us to provide more in-depth, up-to-the minute and insightful coverage of these vital areas for our global readers. The addition of Sourcing Journal’s summits also will also help industry executives stay up to date with the latest trends in the sector.”
Sourcing Journal joins PMC’s media portfolio, which extends beyond the business of fashion and retail to also include lifestyle and entertainment brands Variety Inc., Deadline Hollywood, Robb Report, TVLine.com, Hollywood Life, and IndieWire alongside PMC’s global events and data services. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
“Sourcing Journal’s current growth will further strengthen under the PMC umbrella,” said Mashooqullah. “PMC will be a great home for Sourcing Journal’s talented team; I see Eddie exceling in the publication industry under Jay’s stewardship.”
Transaction Highlights:
- The acquisition brings together two of the fashion and retail industry’s leading sources for breaking news and smart insights vital for today’s global executives.
