Site to leverage expertise of revered U.S. publication for leading entertainment news for Japanese audience
Tokyo, September 16, 2015: Penske Media Corporation (PMC) today announced a new partnership with Tokyo Sangyo Shimbun, Inc. to launch Variety-Japan, to deliver Variety’s revered entertainment content direct to a Japanese audience, signaling PMC’s move toward more such globally-targeted content from its more than 20 media brands. Under the multiyear license, Tokyo Sangyo Shimbun, Inc. will launch and manage Variety-Japan (http://variety.co.jp/), a Japanese language version of Variety.com on September 28th.
“We are extremely proud to have the opportunity to partner with Variety, bringing the leading entertainment publication to a broader audience in Japan,” said President of Tokyo Sangyo Shimbun, Inc. Eiichiro Fukami. “We look forward to many year of collaborating with PMC and the entire Variety organization.”
Headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, Tokyo Sangyo Shimbun, Inc. runs ‘Gadget Tsushin’ and brings to the PMC’s editorial and business teams key understanding of today’s Japanese audience. Together, the two companies will deliver to Japanese readers tailored and translated content from Variety magazine and Variety.com for this new Variety-Japan destination.
“I’m excited to be spearheading this initiative, as I have always believed that international licensing is an effective and rewarding way to expand globally respected brands such as Variety,” said PMC’s EVP Business Affairs and International Operations Paul Woolnough. “We look forward to the launch of Variety-Japan; we envisage this a catalyst for more foreign language versions of not just Variety but all of PMC’s properties.”
Variety brings to the Tokyo Sangyo Shimbun, Inc. team its breaking entertainment news, movie and film reviews, box office results, cover stories, analysis, videos, photo galleries and more. In addition, the Variety business includes a comprehensive Hollywood industry database – a comprehensive resource that includes production charts and calendars, with archived content dating back to Variety’s founding in 1905.
“Variety has 110 years great history. Variety-Japan would be a Japanese language version of this authoritative media. We look forward to contributing to Japanese entertainment business, professionals and fans to provide global entertainment movement” said Shinichi Hirasawa, the Editor-in-Chief of Variety-Japan.
Variety’s industry-leading entertainment news, read by the entertainment industry’s thought leaders, influencers and talent, will also get a boost of Japanese original content, as Japanese entertainment journalists will report on the Japanese entertainment business for publication on Variety-Japan and the English language version of Variety.
“Japan is an incredibly important market to the entertainment industry, which makes this extension of the Variety brand a natural next step for our company,” said Claudia Eller and Andrew Wallenstein, Co-Editors-in-Chief of Variety. “We look forward to working with our new partners at Tokyo Sangyo Shimbun.”
“We are proud of working together and being a group member of Variety which has been dedicating to the global entertainment industry and Hollywood history for long time” said Hiroyuki Nishimura, the Editor-in Chief of Variety-Japan.
