Tom O'Neil is the Chairman Emeritus of Gold Derby, which he launched in 2000 to predict who'll win the Oscars, Emmys, Grammys, reality TV shows and other Hollywood competitions. Previously, he wrote Variety's books "The Emmys," "The Grammys" and "Movie Awards" (Penguin Putnam) and contributed articles to Variety, TV Guide, Reader's Digest, New York Times and other top media in addition to appearing often on TV. Tom licensed Gold Derby to the L.A. Times from 2005 to 2011, but then broke away to build hi-tech functionality to enable thousands of Gold Derby users to make predictions and compete against experts, editors and award fans for best accuracy scores. Penske Media Corporation (PMC) acquired the site in 2015, expanding its tech, editorial and marketing operations.
Tom graduated from the University of Notre Dame (B.A., English) in 1977, then headed to New York City where he worked for decades for legendary editor John Mack Carter in the magazine development division at Hearst before heading to Hollywood.
